Fairy Penguins - Lillico Beach

See the penguins returning to their burrows at dusk from October to March at Lillico Beach. The Lillico Beach Conservation Area is located 6km West of Devonport alongside the Bass Highway. It is a long narrow reserve, 2.5km long and 14 hectares in size. On the beach the silent, waiting humans hold their breath in anticipation. Just off-shore a swirling mass of movement becomes visible in the dark water and then suddenly about 40 little feathered heads poke up and nervously scan the land for danger.
